• An application can be filled out at the Marshall County Sheriff's Office, emailed to dispatch@marshallcountymn.gov, faxed to 218-745-9203, or mailed to 208 E. Colvin Ave. Suite 1, Warren, MN 56762.
• MCSO will conduct a series of background-related checks to assure you meet eligibility requirements established in state and federal law.
• Once those checks are complete, a one-year permit to purchase a handgun or assault-style rifle in Minnesota will be issued.
• Private Party Transfer:
• Certain private party transfers of pistols or semi-automatic military-style assault weapons require background checks. A background check is conducted in one of two ways:
• The buyer undergoes a background check when obtaining a Permit to Purchase.
• Both the buyer and the seller jointly appear before a federally licensed firearms dealer who conducts a background check on the buyer.
• Private parties who transfer a pistol or semi-automatic military-style assault rifle without the assistance of a federally licensed firearms dealer must complete the

• and keep it for 10 years.

• Fill out a
• Permit to Carry Application
• An application must be filled out and submitted in-person at the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.
• When applying for a Permit to Carry, Minnesota Firearm's Law requires you to provide evidence of having received training in the safe use of a handgun from a certified instructor within one year of the original application or renewal.
• MCSO will conduct a series of background-related checks to assure you meet eligibility requirements established in state and federal law.
• Once received, MCSO has 30 days to process the application. A Permit to Carry is valid for five years and is renewable
• Things you will need when applying for a Permit to Carry:
• Application. (MCSO has forms in the office)
• Certificate from training.
• Copy of your ID. (copies can be made at MCSO)
• If it is a renewal, you will also need the old permit.

• * Under Minnesota law, you must obtain a permit to carry a handgun in public. The law does not require that you conceal the weapon. If you have a Permit to Carry you don’t need to obtain a Permit to Purchase to obtain a firearm. (MN Statute 624.7131.9) *
• AS OF APRIL 2025, INDIVIDUALS AGES 18-20 MAY ALSO APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO CARRY.

• Permit to Carry Renewal (cannot be sooner than 90 days of expiration and no later than 30 days of expiration) - $75
